Reading Road Trip: Alabama! + Giveaway!!!

Welcome to my stop on the 2013 Reading Road Trip, Alabama! Your tour guides throughout this trip are the amazing Britta at I Like These Books and Hafsah at IceyBooks!

So when I had the opportunity to represent a state in the 2013 Reading Road Trip, you know I had to go for it. In addition to my home state of Oregon I opted to represent two of my favorite southern states, Alabama and Georgia. In the end, as you can tell I received Alabama. While I don't know too much personally about this state, I did look up a few fun facts to share with you guys. All these facts come from 50States.com

  • Alabama introduced the Mardi Gras to the western world. The celebration is held on Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent begins.
  • Alabama workers built the first rocket to put humans on the moon.
  • Alabama is the only state with all major natural resources needed to make iron and steel. It is also the largest supplier of cast-iron and steel pipe products.
  • In 1902 Dr. Luther Leonidas Hill performed the first open heart surgery in the Western Hemisphere by suturing a stab wound in a young boy's heart. The surgery occurred in Montgomery.
  • Hematite is Alabama's official state mineral and is known as oxide of iron (Fe2O3).

Giveaway

Now on to the good part, the giveaway! When I was asked to give away a book that either took place in Alabama, or is by an author from there I instantly thought of Looking for Alaska by John Green. This is one of my favorite books and while I have yet to write a review on it I'm looking forward to reading it again for that same reason. I'm sorry to say to those international readers that this giveaway is U.S.only.

  1. I've only read Looking for Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars so far, and TFiOS wins between the two. I really enjoyed Looking for Alaska, but TFiOS is one of those books that you never forget. Can't wait to read his other books, and thanks for the chance to win! I borrowed it from the library, and would love to have my own copy :)
