What Zane doesn't know is that the volcano is a gateway to another world and he is at the center of a powerful prophecy. A new girl at school, Brooks, informs him that he's destined to release an evil god from the ancient Maya relic he is imprisoned in—unless she can find and remove it first. Together they return to the volcano, where all kinds of crazy happens. Brooks turns into a hawk, a demon attacks them in a cave, and Rosie gives her all while trying to protect Zane. When Zane decides to save his dog no matter the cost, he is thrust into an adventure full of surprising discoveries, dangerous secrets, and an all-out war between the gods, one of whom happens to be his father. To survive, Zane will have to become the Storm Runner. But how can he run when he can't even walk well without a cane?

Feisty heroes, tricky gods, murderous demons, and spirited giants are just some of the pleasures that await in this fresh and funny take on Maya mythology, as rich and delicious as a mug of authentic hot chocolate.

    

Review:

Protagonist: Zane Obispo was born with one leg shorter than the other, thus he has to use a cane and limps around. Still, he likes going hiking on the volcano in his backyard with his three-legged dog Rosie. That is until one day he meets a girl named Brooks who tells him that he's the catalyst for an ancient prophecy that will lead to the release of Ah Puch, the Mayan god of death, darkness, and destruction. From there, Zane is pulled into a world of magic, gods, and secrets as he tries to make sure that Ah Puch doesn't end up destroying the world and those he loves along with it. I really love the character of Zane. He's not your run into danger first, ask questions later kind of protagonist, in fact, he asks quite a lot of questions, even when he probably shouldn't. He's apprehensive to go into danger, but he's kind and loyal and would face down any number of villains to protect those he loves. He can get a bit angsty and broody as the story unfolds, but it never felt unwarranted or forced in any way, it all felt like a natural extension of the story.

World Building: So, I'm just going to level with you, I knew next to nothing about Mayan mythology going into this story. Still, the world built in this story, the mix of modern day with ancient Mayan lore, felt so rich and vibrant. I'm not going to sit here and claim to have learned a great deal of Mayan mythology from this story because at the end of the day that's what it is, a story, and the mythology was used to enhance the story, not the other way around. There's still a lot to learn about Mayan gods, monsters, and magic and I loved every minute of it, but I can still feel there's a lot more to learn. In regards to the pacing of this book, well that's the only place I personally had a problem, and it's not even a big problem, see the pacing and story structure for this book ended up being very different than I had expected and so when things weren't unfolding at the rate I had expected them to, I had to adjust and get used to it, which took a little time, but in the end was completely worth it. Again, that might only have been a problem for me.

Predictability: As I said, since the story structure and pacing were different than expected, well, things didn't exactly go how I thought they would regardless. Looking back on the book as I whole, I can't remember predicting many of the twists that happened, save one or two that weren't that big. There are some mysteries that had a lot of build up, like who Zane's father is, maybe those with more knowledge of Mayan mythology could have guessed it before the reveal, but I certainly didn't know, and those mysteries were a lot of fun because you know a reveal is coming and having those questions finally answered is always so satisfying.

Ending: The ending of this book is pretty evil. The final climax didn't quite go down how I expected it to, but it was a very intense scene brimming with excitement and action, then there's the cooldown period before the epilogue/postscript, which would have included a very, VERY evil cliffhanger if not for the epilogue. The epilogue plays out as a final cooldown, tying up quite a few loose ends while hinting at, and sometimes straight up announcing, how the sequel will be set up without leaving a whole lot of room for that need for the next installment.

Rating:

I love this book so much, even with the pacing/story structure issue I faced, once I got a feel for the story everything was as right as rain and I could barely put this book down. If you're looking for a fun Middle-Grade adventure, a story with a disabled (Differently abled? Seriously, can someone help me out I'm not sure of the correct terminology) protagonist, and a rich and vibrant mythological tale, then look no further!

Review:

Protagonist: After gaining her freedom from her bottle Nalia still finds herself beholden to Malek and his final wish for her to take him to the Solomon's Sigil, a ring that can control all jinni. Now, Nalia has never been a shy or meek character, in fact she's probably one of the toughest protagonists I've read about, she's got a quick wit and she isn't afraid to put her money where her mouth is. Best of all she's not overly impulsive, she thinks through her big decisions. Does she always come to the correct conclusion? No, but she put thought behind her choices. In this book she gets only stronger, she goes through many struggles in this book, both physical and emotional and while she still has some growing to do by the end, her experiences in this book will no doubt have a lasting impact on her.

Romance: So once again we are given the love triangle between Raif/Nalia/Malek. Now as much of a crazy, obsessive, possessive, vain, power hungry, jerk Malek is, he does have his moments in this book. There aren't a lot and he really only does them because he wants to impress or at the very least not piss of Nalia, but there are moments where it's easy to see that, in his own twisted way, he really does love her. Of course not long after he undoubtedly reinforces my original opinions of him. There's some drama between Nalia and Raif too, there are some things they don't know about each other and some things they still need to confess to each other. Things the other may not want to hear.

World-Building: Moving away from America we move into Morocco, one of the most densely populated jinni areas on Earth. As our heroes search for the ring we learn more about their pasts and the jinni world as a whole. While we have yet to actually see Arjinna, I really didn't mind. This world is so beautiful and expansive. In this book we learn more about the jinni on Earth and those who were under the control of Solomon. As I said, we also learn more about the pasts of our characters, mainly Malek, though this book is by no means focused on him. We learn more about his family and where he came from.

Predictability: So there's a lot to this book that I wasn't expecting. At first things seemed to go much like how I imagined they would, but then before even getting halfway through, things take an unexpected turn and there's no going back. The foreshadowing in this book is rather light, there are a few things I could pick up here and there, but for the bigger twists, the ones that completely took my breath away, there was no way I saw them coming. I do feel like one of the major twists was a bit premature, like there was still some things left to be explored before things changed, but other than that I was pretty much sucked in by these moments.

Ending: So, there was this moment near the end, I was waiting for a final climactic moment. I wanted to see a fight, some sort of struggle, and for our heroes to defeat some great threat, and well, be careful what you wish for. There was a fight, but it was over way too quickly. Now there is a final climax but's it's much more emotional than it is a physical fight, which given the prime threat they had I would have loved to see something more drawn out. The cool down period was rather nice, there was quite a bit of set up for the final installment in this trilogy, culminating in one killer cliffhanger.

Rating:

So this book was hard for me to rate, par of me feels like it deserves a higher rating, this book was very hard to put down and I loved so much about it, but there were just a few things that I felt either happened too soon or were over too quickly. Overall though I really enjoyed this installment and can't wait to see how everything turns out in the final installment.

Blog Tour Book Review: It's All Your Fault + GIVEAWAY!

Now I'm in jail and I have no idea what I'm going to tell:

The police, my parents, the mayor, all of those camera crews and everyone on Twitter.

I have just noticed that:

My nose is pierced and I have-WAIT? IS THAT A TATTOO?

I blame one person for this entire insane weekend:

My famous cousin.

Who is also my former best friend.

Who I have HATED for the past four years.

Who I miss like crazy. NO I DON'T!!!!

IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT, HELLER HARRIGAN!!!!

    

Review:

Protagonist: This book is told from the point of view of Caitlin Singleberry, yes that's her actual last name, don't ask me why. Anyway, Caitlin is your typical all around "Good Christian Girl" which means she's uptight, pious, and stuck-up. Heller Harrigan, Caitlin's famous cousin is her polar opposite, she's a bitchy party-girl who's fallen off the wagon one too many times. It's when these two characters come together and balance each other out that they can start to look at their lives, and each other, in a whole new way. While I was annoyed with Caitlin's sanctimonious nature a lot of the time, but sometimes it can be downright laughable, in a good comedic way. Over the course of the book, though not as soon as you might think, Caitlin begins to loosen up and realize that no one's perfect, not even herself.

Romance: So there's really isn't much romance in this book. Honestly I debated even putting this section in here, but there is a romance in this book, a love triangle in fact. It's not your typical love triangle though, it's not over the top, no one drops the L-word, and it's a fun and scandalous romance for Caitlin to be caught between two boys. There's some great irony written in to the romance and some really meta moments that were really fun to read.

World-Building: Gah! There's so much to this world that I loved. First off, Heller stars in this big blockbuster YA series turned movie series. With it comes all of these great meta YA moments. Even though I know it's fiction and I don't know how much research the author put into it, I'm assuming a lot based on how real it feels, it's so interesting to see this side of things, how stressed out actors get, how they feel about online backlash of casting choices, and how one person's opinion can send the internet, and the actor, spiraling. I felt as though this was the perfect backdrop for the story and lended a lot to the story progression and some of the humor and appeal of this book. There are definitely a lot of pop culture and bookish references made, though most of them are masked with thinly veiled pseudonyms. There's a lot to this story to enjoy and learn about.

Predictability: So I have to say, other than a few things, this book was fairly unpredictable. From the start we know that somewhere down the line in the story Heller and Caitlin will end up in jail, but the ride on the way to the slammer isn't as cut and dry as you'd think. I loved seeing the way things were twisted and just how much of Caitlin's freak out was her overreacting and how much of it was the truth.

Ending: So this book doesn't really have a final climax, I mean, I guess all of the stuff after we catch back up with Caitlin in jail and how that's dealt with could be considered the final climax, but as I was reading it I never felt that doubt about where the story was going to go, that tension and feeling like things may not quite go right. The final chapter served as the cool down and there was a lot to love about it. The ending wasn't super idealistic, it still felt real and the characters still felt so real. While I know this is a stand alone I can't help but want to know what happens next.

Rating:

I'm actually surprised that I ended up giving this book five stars, when I first started it, things were a little slow, Caitlin was an annoying character, but once the story got going and I got to see more than just the surface of these character's personalities I really got invested into this world and ended up loving this book!
