Book Review: Tiger's Destiny (The Tiger Saga #4)

Release Date: September 4, 2012
Author: Colleen Houck
Publisher: Splinter Publishing
Length: 464 pages

With three of the goddess Durga's quests behind them, only one prophecy now stands in the way of Kelsey, Ren, and Kishan breaking the tiger's curse. But the trio's greatest challenge awaits them: A life-endangering pursuit in search of Durga's final gift, the Rope of Fire, on the Adaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal.

It's a race against time--and the evil sorcerer Lokesh--in this eagerly anticipated fourth volume of the bestselling Tiger's Curse series, which pits good against evil, tests the bonds of love and loyalty, and finally reveals the tiger's' true destiny once and for all.

Review:

Characters: Once a young, vibrant high school graduate, Kelsey Hayes has grown into beautiful young woman who has entranced all those who have crossed her path. Though she would never admit it Kelsey has become a strong and resilient warrior, and in this book her skills are put to the ultimate test. While trapped by the evil sorcerer Lokesh, Kelsey has to keep her calm and pool her knowledge in order to escape. While she is trapped, Kelsey learns the history of Lokesh, how he came to possess three pieces of the Damon Amulet, and the malevolent acts he carried out to achieve his prize.

Romance: The romance in this installment is more tame than the previous one. However, Kelsey is forced to face realities that she cannot alone. Through some divine help, she learns the truth of her feelings and learns who she truly wishes to be with.

Destiny: I knew by the title that destiny plays a large part in this installment, just as the curse and its introduction was in the first, the quests in the second, and the voyage in the third, but unlike those destiny is a much larger part played throughout the entirety of this installment. It is not just the tigers who's destiny is revealed, but that of Lokesh, Kelsey, and Durga.

Mythology: A common theme among every installment is the mythological background featured. Unlike previous installments though I was less entranced by the tales and mythological creatures. This is because as readers we will finally learn how Durga came to be and of her creation. I have to applaud Colleen Houck. She weaved a beautiful tale centered around Indian mythology.

Predictability: Like the previous installments this one is full of foreshadowing and hints as to upcoming  twists. I was also surprised to notice that previous installments also held foreshadowing clues as to what will transpire in this jaw dropping, heart-pounding, and breathtaking volume.

Ending: I was a bit disappointed by the end of this book, while it tied everything up many of the important choices were left to  be decided by some sort of cop-out reason instead of the characters actually making the decisions for themselves. I felt a bit cheated out of a real ending and am hoping this ending will be redeemed in the next installment/spin-off/full-length epilogue, Tiger's Dream.

Rating:

While my eyes were glued to every page and I was pained when I had to put the book down, the ending was too dissapointing to warrent this book 5 crests. Either way I'd still say if you love this series you won't regret reading this installment. Be sure to buy it from Barnes and Noble or Amazon

  1. Thanks for the review! I'm so excited about this book! So, the thing I love most about the Tiger Series is the interwoven mythological aspect. I love mythology in all forms and cultures, and the stories and deities Colleen chooses to include are ones not often seen in American literature. I love it! Now, I don't know if you'd want to do something as mainstream as Cassie Clare's work, but I'd definitely like to see your perspective on her Mortal Instrument series, and especially the Prequel series The Infernal Devices. For something maybe a little off the beaten path, maybe Fearless by Francine Pascal if you haven't reviewed that one already.

  2. Great review! I love all the Tiger Saga books so far and am looking forward to Tiger's Destiny. One of the reasons I love the books because of the setting in India! The way Colleen describes everything in India is soo descriptive and magical =]. Plus, I would love to be friends with Kelsey, Ren, and Kishan.

  4. Kishan is my favorite thing! I fell in love with him from the moment he made his first appearance. Ren who?!

As for more books to review, I'll have to think on it. I'm a new follower, so I need to study up and see what you've already done!

  6. Great review! I think that when you said, "through divine help, she learns the truth of her feelings and learns who she truly wishes to be with", I think that Kelsey is going to be with Ren because she truly does love him inside but she just blocked her feelings out because Ren didn't want her when he couldn't remember anything. So she chose t be with Kishan instead. Also the connection they have is unbreakable. I think this is going to be the best book yet where we find out all of their destinies.

    1. And my favorite thing about the series.. I'd have to say the mythology, the love/romance between Kelsey and Ren, and Colleen's writing style. She gives a lot of details, some people would say too many details or insignificant details, but I love them. For me, reading all of these details just draws me into the story more, like I'm there - in Kelsey's shoes, seeing and feeling everything she sees and feels.

I'm not sure which reviews you've done already. I'd suggest The Hunger Games (like previously mentioned from someone else), The Iron King by Julie Kagawa, and maybe Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon. Mermaid is a twist on the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale. It's also another new favorite of mine. Some people didn't really "get it", but I did and loved it. Another suggestion, instead of "book reviews" what about doing some author reviews? You could pick an author, read a few of their books and do a review on their styles, vision, etc.

  9. Thank you soooo much for this giveaway! I love the Tiger's Saga.
And to say my favorite thing about it, well, I love the romance. It's swoon-worthy and sizzling. I love the mythology, it's a fresh new take that hasn't been used very often. I love the adventure and all the nonstop action that has my heart pounding like crazy. But most of all, I love the brothers. Not in the romantic way, but I kind of admire them.
And another book you should definitely review Blood Red Road by Moira Young. It's. Amazing!

  15. This is probably one of my new favorite series. I am so excited for Tiger's Destiny and absolutely LOVED the first 3. There is so much mythology and the world is wonderfully described. Makes me want to go to India.

I'd love to see a few reviews on the Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare as well. It'd be interesting to hear other thoughts on them.

  16. I just wanted to leave an update on this review. I was SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS BOOK, as you can see by a comment I left here a while back. But somehow, the entire ending of this book actually did ruin the series for me... First of all, the way the love triangle ended in this book was not only pretty tragic, but it was downright... crappy. Not because of the thought necessarily, but because of the callous actions of the characters. Frankly, I really just hated Kelsey by this point because of her indecision and downright pettiness at points. It was justified in the writing at points, but I didn't feel reconciled by it. The character that got thrown under the bus at the end was handled so badly that I got the pairing I wanted and I actually kind of hated myself for it. ;/ Interested to know how you felt when you read the actual ending.
