Book Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Release Date: May 1, 2012
Author: Veronica Roth
Publisher: HarperTeen
Length: 525 pages

"One choice can transform you--or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves--and herself--while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable--and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so."

Review:

Characters: Tris an Four narrowly escape the Abnegation massacre, with Tris's brother, Caleb, and enemy Peterin tow. However, after her parents' tragic deaths and Tris impulsively killing her best friend who was brainwashed by the Erudite, Tris can barely keep her sanity. Be prepared for a more skeptical Tris who's fears have grown significantly. We see some old characters returning as well as some new ones added to the mix, but do not expect everyone to be welcoming to Tris and Four after Jeanine brainwashed Four into running the Dauntless simulation.

Romance: Although I love the characters of Tris and Four I do think that their relationship gets a little dysfunctional in this book. There are some trust and perception issues that the couple needs to work through. I'm pulling for them, but when I read this book I would constantly be mad at one or the other for misinterpreting the situation. Still, I'm excited to see where Ms. Roth will take this couple and what other romances she has for other characters, say Caleb for example.

Predictability: My mind is blown. I feel like I'm Hansel and following the trail of breadcrumbs set out for me but instead of ending at home I end up somewhere so much better, say like a five-star resort. I couldn't believe the places Ms. Roth took this series. I was surprised by the risks she took with the story line and how well it turned out. It's so hard for me to articulate the amazing lack of predictability spread throughout this novel. Just read this book and you'll see how crazy awesome it gets.

Ending: The ending will "change everything" I was expecting something so much more tame than the ending that I ended up with. The last few pages introduce a plot element that will turn this universe on it's end. Like my predictability section, the awesomeness and risk that this ending entails can't even be properly articulated. Let's just say that while on the cusp of victory, everyone's world is rocked to the core.

Overall, 5 out of 5 stars, there is no way what so ever that this book could get any less than that. To be honest, if I could I would give it 6 out of 5 stars, but... I can't. Be sure to pick up this amazing book from your local bookstore or from Amazon.com, and be prepared for the untitled Book 3 coming in Fall 2013.
